Posted By Sam Basta, Sunday, August 08, 2010

OUTSTANDING!!

PSFK identifies 15 trends that will affect the future of healthcare.  Most trends map pretty well to Future Healthcare=Ubiquitous Sensing+Big Data Medicine+Designed Care Expriences

Ubiquitous Sensing: Handheld Hospital, Tracking Matters, Remote Diagnostics, DIY Check  Up, Picturing Our Health, Wellness Tracking, Gaming for Health

Big Data Medicine: Picturing Our Health, Wellness Tracking, Remote Diagnostics

Designed Care Expriences: SMS Consultation, Picturing Our Health, Wellness Tracking, Gaming for Health

Big-Data-Medicine: Google's Brin and Pakinson's Disease

Posted By Sam Basta, Sunday, July 25, 2010

Wired magazine provides a good introduction to big-data-medicine.

The diagram above from that article depicts a six-fold acceleration in time to results of a BDM trial compared to an NIH-funded traditional study testing the same hypothesis.

Big-Data-Medicine (BDM) Gets A $100M Commitment From IBM

Posted By Sam Basta, Thursday, July 15, 2010
Updated: Thursday, July 15, 2010

Evidence-based medicine (EBM) was making healthcare decisions based on the results of clinical trials with a limited number of subjects and a limited number of data points (e.g. 400 patients with diabetes taking a medication and having their blood sugar measured three times daily for six months = 216,000 data points).  BDM is the healthcare decision making that will evolve out of population level trials with massive numbers of data points (e.g. 50,000 diabetics taking a medication and having their blood sugars continuously monitored using impantable sensors = BILLIONS OF DATA POINTS).  But BDM will also be tailoring an individual diabetic's treatment based on continuously monitoring their blood sugar using an implantable sensor, analyzing the data in the context of their genomic data and their entire medical and family history.

IBM is making a three-year $100M bet that they (not the traditional medical research establishment) have the knowledge and technology to make BDM a reality.

Lessons for Innovators and Designers from the Downfall of a General

Posted By Sam Basta, Thursday, June 24, 2010
Updated: Friday, June 25, 2010
Great piece by Bruce Nussbaum in HBR's The Conversation about the McChrystal saga.  Lots of lessons for designers in surviving in organizations.  A great addition to the list from Roger Martin.

Future Care in Action: Geriatric Care Example

Posted By Sam Basta, Wednesday, June 23, 2010

GE and Intel apply the Future Care equation (= Sensors + Big Data + Designed Care Exprience) to Geriatric Care.  Motion sensors in the the individual's home measure movement.  Pattern recognition software detects changes in normal activity and alerts care providers.  The unobtursive technology enables the elderly to continue to live independently while maintaining peace of mind for them and their families.  Just the beginning.

Future Care = Sensors + Big Data + Designed Care Expriences

Posted By Sam Basta, Wednesday, June 23, 2010

Some pretty profound thinking by Rajiv Mehta on the convergence of healthcare, information technology and design.  You can find an interesting article by Rajiv on the same topic at Interactions.  Rajiv already started a discussion with these links on the Healthcare Innovation by Design Linkedin group.  Would love to get a conversation going on this topic.

The Future of Healthcare is Self-directed and Increasingly Physicianless

Posted By Sam Basta, Sunday, June 20, 2010

In their 2009 report, the California Healthcare Foundation surveyed the field of self-diagnostics and self-care and reached the following conclusion: "One notable evolution has been a shift in diagnosis, monitoring, and treatment from physicians to mid-level clinicians and consumers, offering less costly and more convenient options.  Innovative technologies, regulatory changes, and consumer interest are major factors driving this shift.  The technolgies include simple, accurate, and inexpensive tests and devices for a wide range of medical conditions, and online search, information, and interconnec tivity. The trend could potentially increase the health care system's capacity and thereb create access to care while reducing costs and improving health outcomes."
