| Design's role in the healing process is complicated. Simply having talented and experienced practitioners execute floor plans and exterior forms based upon a program will produce a beautiful building, but not yield the intended result. On the flip side, focusing on metrics and function can lead to spaces that are institutional and may even reinforce negative care models or department silos. How can we transcend the status quo and take meaningful steps to respond to today’s healthcare needs and new technologies with an environment of care that’s equally as innovative? This webinar will discuss techniques for promoting a culture of healing, creating agile spaces that reinforce that culture, and management techniques for channeling multiple demand streams and initiatives to support the goals of your project.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES/// 1. Describe the three basic steps of successful design collaboration 2. Differentiate between process change and culture change as it relates to a design problem 3. Apply the concept of value streams in multiple departments to create a multidimensional and quantifiable definition of success
Speaker BIO/// Angela Mazzi, AIA, ACHA, EDAC
Healthcare environments tremendously impact their users, who often have little opportunity to control them. Angela's work focuses on enhancing quality of life through the built environment. She specializes in synthesizing diverging points of view and developing common goals for moving forward with innovative design solutions. Angela advocates leading through listening: working with clients to align project goals with their mission and business goals, then developing a research, program and planning strategy that can be followed through design, construction and post-occupancy. Her background in architecture and business management and research on socio-cultural contexts gives her a unique perspective on the ways an organization’s culture can sometimes create roadblocks to the very things they want to achieve. |

On May 17 and 18, Luma Institute faculty: Paul Gould and Lauren Chapman presented a broad range of human-centered design tools and techniques with many healthcare-specific case studies. The attendees learned how to utilize human-centered design to understanding the healthcare consumer, analyzing their needs and desires, and using this deep contextual understanding to design products and services that are highly usable and deeply engaging.
It was surprising to see the amount of learning that could happen in two days. In the word of attendee Laura Wood, DNP, VP, National Director Clinical Solutions at Siemens "The HIxD Live 2012 Program on Human Centered Design (HCD) was expertly facilitated by the LUMA Institute faculty. The framework for the two-day workshop spanned putting people first, interviewing, personas, contextual inquiry, and usability inspection. A broad range of tools were introduced and applied in the context of the workshop that are equally applicable across health care delivery and industry settings. This was an exceptional program which stimulated numerous ideas for how HCD tools can enhance meaningful engagement with patients, families and front line staff to improve health and health care." I couldn't have said it better!
Attendees were eager to get back to their organizations to share what they have learned and start using the tools. The Founders Inn in Virginia Beach provided the best possible setting (and food) for a creative atmosphere.
Planning is under way for the remaining workshops in the HIxD Certified Healthcare Design and Experience Innovator (CHDxI) curriculum.
For those who missed the workshop, you can still get a taste of the application of HCD to healthcare from Luma/MAYA. Workshop presenter and Designer/Researcher Lauren Chapman and Director of Engineering/Senior Design Engineer John Crowley presented the HIxD Pioneers June webinar titled "Innovating for Chronic Illness: Designing Service Systems and New Technology for People with Diabetes". The full recording is now available to premium members under the HIxD Pioneers tab.
